There was an aged Washington Division Southern Railway passenger conductor during the late 1960s named Jessie Sprouse. It was said that he began his railroad career as an early teenage after lying about his age and started working as a go-fer at the Alexandria roundhouse. One morning the roundhouse foreman observed Jessie with a long pole stirring around down into the cinder pit. The foreman asked, "Jessie, what are you doing?"
"I'm trying to get my jacket which fell in," Jessie replied.
"You're not going to wear it again, are you?" said the foreman.
"No --but my lunch is in the pocket."
