Steam loco lettering

Photographic evidence provides a recap. When the K-2a and Y-3a classes were built in 1923, the road numbers were stenciled on the cab and there was no lettering on the tender sides. When the K-3 and Y-3b (later Y-4) classes arrived in 1926 and ’27 respectively, they had both the road number and “Norfolk &(ampersand) Western” on the cab. In June 1941 the N&W Magazine announced that the new scheme of having “Norfolk and Western” stenciled in the tender. Note that the word “and” is spelled out in the 1941 lettering scheme.

Existing power got the new stenciling over time either at regularly scheduled heavy repairs or at shops with the stenciling capability.

It was on the cab side by the time the Y4's were built in 1927 - maybe earlier.

You're misunderstanding, in the fortunate way. You're good to go. In the '50s they DID have the "Norfolk & Western."

This thread had piqued my interest because I model N&W in the mid 50's. All of the tenders that came with the models that I own have Norfolk &/and Western on them. Did the N&W not have the logo on their tenders in the 1950's? If that's the case, I need to get out the black paint and some small decals for the locos.

Jim,

I agree with Jim Nichols. A quick search of the stenciling diagrams on the NWHS archives page yielded these two hits:

https://www.nwhs.org/archivesdb/detail.php?ID=24965

https://www.nwhs.org/archivesdb/detail.php?ID=24964

Note the original date of the drawings is May 1941; perhaps someone at the archives can check the stenciling revision books and do a reverse search; this might help identify when stenciling was removed from the tenders.

I think it started earlier then that.

Does anyone know the exact dates for when "Norfolk & Western" was stenciled on locomotive cabs rather than on tender sides? From photos I have seen it would maybe be mid to late '30s to early '40s.

Thanks,

Jim Cochran
