trains 5 & 6 and recorded much of those runs from the baggage car at the
head of the train. Pacific 578?s Hancock whistle is very prominent in those
recordings and Bill captured some great sound as the train got up to speed
out of Bluefield, Va before working it?s way toward Norton over grades,
trestles, and through tunnels. He kept the recorder going at some of the
station stops where you hear talk from the crew and ground personnel and
related activity. If there is sufficient interest, I?ll produce a CD from
those trips.

Jim, Can you give a brief history on Bill Bauer? Never heard of him or his
recordings before. Might be good to include his bio on the CD as well.
Thanks, John Garner

Thanks to all who responded. I?m working on it.

Speaking of whistles, did the J and K2 class engines have the same whistles?
It seems to me that they sounded different. Actually, in Bill Bauer?s
recordings of his ride on trains 25 and 26, there were differences in
whistle sounds from the J class engines pulling those trains.

Folks, please keep the Society in mind when we have these discs in hand.

Jim Herron has already been advised that the Society will sell copies, and
just as soon as we have them, I will put out a notice to the list with a
link where they can be ordered.
