On this page is a photo of the pair of Virginian Railway piers at Sewells Point:

That photo was looking Eastward, just North of the approach to Naval Air Station (NAS) Norfolk runway 10 direction of runway 10-28.  The main holding yard can be seen in the background, and the tracks were constricted to one or two overhead tracks crossing Hampton Blvd, which has long been the main street into the Norfolk Naval Station (NS).  

 

The shoreline at the piers was largely maintained when the Navy demolished the old piers and constructed new piers, which can be seen on maps today (my info is based on Bing maps).  I think the new piers are designated NS Norfolk piers 24 and 25, and are very close the same locations of the old piers. 

 

For those not familiar with this area, the NS and NAS are adjacent, within one fenced area, and they comprise what was referred to as Naval Operating Base (NOB) Norfolk, later called Naval Base Norfolk.   This designation has been in a state of constant change for 10-15 years, but either of these terms get good recognition in the area.

Notice the aircraft approaching NAS Norfolk runway 10.  

 

All of the ex-Virginian property in these photographs was purchased by the Navy from N&W in the late 1960s – early 1970s, for expansion.  All of the steelwork on the piers, and trackwork, was removed by about 1970, but remnants of the structure over Hampton Blvd remained for some years.

Using Mapquest and my best estimate; the VGN pier at Sewells Point was 5 to 5.5 miles north of the VGN pier 5 at Lamberts Point. 

There seems to be no remaining satellite evidence of the VGN yard and pier.

The N&W has had a secession of coal piers at Lamberts Point, viz:  Pier 1 1885, Pier 2 1891,  Pier 3 1901, Pier 4 1914, Pier 5 1936 (the active N&W coal pier at the time of the Virginian merger - Dec. 1959) and Pier 6  1962.

 

The N&W coal piers at Lamberts Point and the Virginian coal piers at Sewells Point were several miles apart (maybe 3 to 5 miles apart).    Maybe someone else can give a more accurate figure on the spacing.
