I was wondering about some N&W steamer stuff and want to see if anyone knows the answers.

Did all J's receive doghouses near the end?

All 14 J’s got them.

Did any K-2's get doghouses?

None.  At least there is no documentation or photos.

What 2 A's swapped front engine assemblies when the one dropped the crosshead guide?

1205 and 1213.

How long did they run this way?

To the end.
