Question for Ed King

This does, indeed, bring on more talk. Why no hose to the center axle?

Having spent some time at Shaffers Crossing Car Dept. one of the things you didn’t want to find was water in a journal box.

Archives Locator drawing NW Mech Dwg.-C32372 is titled "Water Line to Journal Boxes Loco. Tenders, with T - 27. and T - 40 Trucks." It shows a pipe nipple tapped into the bottom corner of the tender cistern over the front truck feeding a globe value then a pipe tee with a 6'-6" hose attached to the forward end of the tee with a pipe plug in the training end of the tee. A note reads, "One hose to be carried on each side of tender." Over the rear trucks there is a similar arrangement of the pipe nipple tapped into the bottom corner of the water cistern, a globe valve, and a pipe tee, but with both outlets plugged and no hose! So, it looks as though the hose are for water, not lubrication, but the drawing posed more questions that it answers about the need for the hoses.

I think they are for lubrication. I'm pretty sure that there is a lubrication diagram in the archives that show them, but, my computer is down and can't access the site.

  Roger -

I never heard anyone explain those hoses to me, but I don’t think they were for lubrication. I think they wee for water in case of a hotbox, but that doesn’t explain why the center journal didn’t have one. The T-40 truck was designed so that the weight was equal or pretty near equal on all six journals.

Maybe there is someone who can enlighten us both.

  Glad you’re liking the book.

I just finished re-reading "The A" book for I can't remember how many times. It's just a superb book that does great justice to a great engine. Every time i read it I find something new. This time it's a tender question.

On pages 192-193 is a great shot of the unique 15,000 gallon tender. Love the style of them! Anyway, the trucks have some sort of line going to the first and third journals of both trucks with shutoff valves. I'm assuming (Oh no!) they are lubrication lines. If so, why don't the center journals have these lines?

Thanks for the annual joy I receive from reading your book!
