I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but O. Winston Link’s recording at Rural Retreat was made December 27, 1957, not on Christmas Eve.  This was covered in The Arrow, Vol.25, No.4, Oct-Dec 2009,  which described Link’s activities in the Rural Retreat area from Dec 24 through Dec 27.  In fact, he did make a recording on Christmas eve, but he didn’t like it because of ambient noise problems.  He came back Dec 26 to take photos and Dec 27 to make the recording on The Fading Giant.  This is documented in Link’s own handwriting in one of his notebooks.

In the 2020 winter issue of Classic Trains there is a nice piece on N&W passenger train 42, the eastbound Pelican, which was the train recorded at Rural Retreat, VA  on Christmas Eve 1957 by O Winston Link. This is the recording on the Fading Giant (Sounds of Steam Railroading Vol 2) which begins and ends with Christmas carols being played on the chimes of a nearby church. The Pelican is heard arriving and then quickly departing behind Class J 603. The Classic Trains article gives a brief history of the New Orleans-New York train which was shared by the Southern, N&W, and Pennsylvania. After reading the article I had to go listen to this classic recording once again. Merry Christmas! Shawn Harley________________________________________
