Highest Elevation Marker

The reference of the highest point just west of Rural Retreat is in relation to The Great Southern Mail Route established between New York and New Orleans in 1858. US Mail from northern connections was handled by Virginia and Tennessee between Lynchburg and Bristol. This traffic flow over the line from Lynchburg to Bristol would last for more than a century, being interrupted only by the Civil War. The summit just west of Rural Retreat, at 2,581 feet, was the highest elevation on the route between New York and New Orleans.

It has been well documented and I have read in several books where the highest point on the N&W "mainline" was in the Rural Retreat area.

Gary, If such a photographic record exist I'd say there's a good chance it may be in an old issue of the N&W magazine. Not sure if it's possible to search the back issues for 'Rural Retreat', 'Highest' or 'Elevation'. My 2 cents, John Garner

I guess I should have been more specific, apparently the marker was in place before the N&W took control of the Virginia Carolina railway and Whitetop took the prize. We’ve all heard the stories around here, but sadly, there might not be any photographic proof.
