Chuck:One of the last incidents at (or near) Ball's Hole occurred on December 27, 1980.at the Singer cross-over. It was practice for eastbounds having traffic for Kroger at Salem to leave their train clear of the Singer cross-over, deliver the Kroger cars, then return light,re-couple to the train and come to Shaffers Crossing.

PW 84 Eng 645 entered the crossover with the Kroger set-off in tow and T-boned NB-87.
Coverage in The Roanoke Times's December 30th edition indicates that the cause of the head-end collision was still under investigation.  Nine locomotives and 28 cars were derailed.  Railroad supervisors found evidence suggesting that a portion of the eastbound track collapsed.  Five crew members were injured.   Harry Bundy
