The Maitland Mine was closed in 1953. The Pocahontas Fuel Company acquired the mine lease in 1956, but did not operate the mine. The Consolidation Coal Company finally absorbed its Pocahontas Fuel Division into the main company and reopened the Maitland Mine in 1967. The loaded coal was sent to the cleaning plant at the former Pocahontas Fuel Co. No. 7 Mine at Jenkinjones. Hence the short loads from Wilcoe Yard to No. 7 at Jenkinjones. Consolidation also sent the coal loaded from its Beech Fork Mine on Dry Fork Branch to No. 7 for cleaning.

The Maitland Mine was operated by Consolidation Coal until 1983, when it was sold to United States Steel, which operated the mine as its Seneca Mine.

The No. 7 cleaning plant was modernized in 1956, and again after Consolidation Coal took it over.

The No. 6 Mine operated until 1980 and the No. 7 mine was operated until 1983. A new mine, No. 4, was opened in Jenkinjones in 1978 and operated until 1989. The cleaning plant was closed in 1989.

Paul,

“Short Loads” is term that has been used less frequently over the last 25 years. Short loads are also referred to as “Raw Coal”. It is coal that has not been cleaned adequately of rock or other impurities to be delivered directly to the consuming consumer. So, if the mine location didn’t have adequate cleaning facilities the loads would be moved to a more extensive “cleaning plant” for processing. Hope this answers your question.

Cheers,
