Sounds like it’s designed to be a strain relief, in case it hits something too solid. 

Still speaks well for lasting this long, considering how many tons of coal it has likely pushed after all these years.

The drawings for the screw show that the hollow center is actually correct and by design.  That wasn't a 'defect' as described in the notice from VMT.

If that's the original 1950 stoker screw that broke, it says a lot about how
strong it still was to last this many years with that imperfection in it.
