It wasn't realignment. The original route was the 12-pole line and the “N” mileposts were located there. When the Big Sandy Line was built the mileposts were labeled NA rather than N and Kenova was 59.2 miles from Naugatuck on the new route, but the N mileposts remained on the 12-pole line. After the Big Sandy Line was double tracked (1923-1925) it became the main line and the 12-Pole line became a branch line until it closed in Sept 1933. The 12-Pole Line retained the N mile posts and the Big Sandy Line retained the Na mileposts.

Look at the Kenova District and you’ll see it was shortened by over 24 miles between Naugatuck and Kenova with a realignment. Naugatuck is MP N484.3/Na0.0 while Kenova is N567.9/Na59.2. The old route was 83.6 miles from Naugatuck to Kenova which was reduced to 59.2 miles (this all from TT #7 dated 7/8/1979).
