Marty-"RD" controlled the east end only.  Eastbound coal trains woulddouble three tracks loaded with coal together in the East Yard. Itcould foul the two main tracks.  "RD" would arrange a route anddecide whether or not to delay an approaching movement. "RD"also controlled entrance to the Radford Division Pull-in track usedby some westbounds terminating at Bluefield.  Some eastboundsreceived train orders at "RD".
What's interesting is what happened after "RD" was closed.  Usually,a train reporting for duty at the initial terminal is expected to receivetrain orders AND a clearance card from the operator. Not at Bluefield. The conductor on eastbounds reporting at East Yard were responsiblefor selecting two copies of each order penned to the wall at the yard office--one order for the engine crew and one for the train crew -- NO CLEAR-ANCE CARD.  A clerk at the Pocahontas Division office would take acar to the East Yard office and pin additional train orders to the wall when needed..So what happened if the yard office ran out of even a single train order ?                                                                 Harry Bundy
