Auville Yard question

Larry

The railroads used everything they could to save money. Stone ballast cost money, and cinders were free and had to be disposed of. In many places, yard tracks or sidings, when the usage of the track allowed it, cinder fill was used instead of ballast. It did not drain as well as the stone but required a whole lot less work and cost than the rock.
