Section Master & Section Gang

Two questions for those with real knowledge, please.

  1. In the pre-1900 days was there a section gang for every mile of track whose job ideally was to keep the tracks in safe condition?
  2. How many passengers could be seated on an average passenger car?

The May 24, 1892 issue of the Richmond Dispatch noted two vestibule trains of seven cars each were due to come through carrying 600 railroad surgeons. That would be about 43 passengers per car not counting any railroad employees.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the less informed.

Mike,

I built a styrene jig for a pair of AMB CFs, and used Grandt Line 5045 1"
NBWs.
