E3 locomotives

The choice of stationary boilers would appear to have been mostly a matter of which locomotives were being retired when there was a new need for a stationary boiler. If I remember correctly, the roundhouse in Crewe had a boiler from a Z1.

We only have bits and pieces of history.  What about the second life of locomotive boilers.  Three of the 5 Y1 class were converted to stationary boilers.  Two at Roanoke and one at Bristol roundhouses.  Why were three chosen for conversion to stationary boilers?

What I always wondered about with the E3 engines is how the N&W shop forces dealt with those Belpaire fireboxes.
Given that the E3's were only on the N&W for a dozen years or so, it may well be that none of the engines ever came due for firebox renewal.  Constructing a Belpaire firebox would have required new jigs, the drafting of new drilling patterns, new stay bolt practices,  and probably a lot more new ways and means which I never thought of.
It is indeed unfortunate that shop history and practices were seldom recorded at the local level.  Our knowledge of such matters is largely confided to industry trade press magazines.
Same for the X-1 and Y-1 Mallet engines.  Wouldn't it be grand to have written accounts from local people about the introduction, operation and maintenance of these machines ?
