One Tick'ee to White Post, Please

An impressive ticket cabinet, Abram. I have observed from Official Guides that junction depots such as Waynesboro or high-passenger traffic stations such as Luray were coupon stations. The rest, such as Boyce and White Post were card ticket stations for local traffic. I have many questions about this, although Boyce may have had a one-way coupon ticket for N&W local stations not on the Shenandoah Division. I surmise that if someone wanted an interline coupon ticket, Pullman reservation, or something else other than local travel, the passenger had to go to the depot a day or more in advance. The agent in turn contacted the General Passenger Agent's office at Roanoke which had all of the applicable tariffs and ticket forms and could make Pullman or reserved seat reservations on a connecting railroad. The completed ticket was then sent to the agent via Railroad Business Mail --probably registered-- for the agent to sell to the passenger.

I wish I could have asked this question 50 years ago when there were some surviving ticket agents. Oh well... That said, I did have someone stop by Boyce depot a few years ago who said that he bought a one-way ticket to White Post on the daytime local for the train ride, then walked back up the track to Boyce.

Happy holidays,
