Y3 Trivia

Interesting. About 15 years ago, I was at an auction in Salem that a J bell was up, I am pretty certain it was 607. Went too rich for my blood, and did not see any reason to add yet another heavy toe breaker to my collection.

I think about half the bells I have seen were stamped with a number, some with more than one, some were simply a shop number, but most were actual locomotive numbers.

That makes sense on the markings Larry, I find it interesting they would be in place that late in the game for a Y3.

I am told that all the cage contents were gone in recent years. But most of what I saw I believe were original bells, but they had to cast new cradles for them and machine that. At least one was stamped with a 216x number

I know the story about your friend who donated the bell to VMT such a waste probably already out the back door . Like some other artifacts they have been giving never see the light of day . Also most of those steam bells in the cage are new castings not originals at least the seven or eight that I saw

They used the money to build a steeple on their church. Forty some years ago, I traded it off for several builders plates, all of which I still have. My friend passed away about 2018, and the bell was donated in 2021 by my friend’s widow to VMT.

They were often presented to churches, fire stations, schools, etc. on request. So, over the years, the steam bell supply dwindled.
