Extended Stack on Z

List, 

In a scene in “Operation Fast Freight” (on YouTube, and also available remastered for rent on Vimeo - https://vimeo.com/ondemand/filmsofthenandw <https://vimeo.com/ondemand/filmsofthenandw>), there is a short sequence of a Z switching what appears to be a chemical or petroleum plant. The locomotive has an extended stack. Was this common, and what was it’s purpose?  Better draft while switching? Better visibility? See the attached photo.
