Here is a quick example of what we are talking about.

Two views from our Archives. Top is 1218 in regular service, bottom is 1239 in regular service. Notice the arrow pointing to the end of the jacketing on 1239.


The thing I believe you are seeing is something N&W to my knowledge, never head, a “Coffin” feedwater heater, show on this image I found on the internet.
