Merry Christmas, Frank!! Have a safe journey to where ever you are headed.
I model the 1950s. Too bad I never heard one of your talks. If you ever publish any of them, please let me know.
Happy Holidays to ALL!

Subject: Re: N&W bldg colors
Well Carl, since none of the real experts on this list have replied, I'll give you a partial answer. This question would certainly have provoked a faster and more accurate response on one of the C&O lists, but here goes:
I don't have my C&O structure books to hand, as we are traveling. But I recall discussions of structure colors in variations of buff (almost a pale washed out yellow to my eye), or an orange--as shared by Milwaukee and Virginian (how closely shared is a good subject best considered calmly over beverages). Later C&O settled on a very exciting....three tone gray. Labled in at least some of their official drawings as......wait for it.....light, medium, and dark.
So this is a good time to enlarge on a comment made in reply to your question about N&W color schemes, further enlarged on in my structure clinics.
1)Decide on an era of interest.
2)Find a picture in the time frame you want to model, as close as you can. Be aware that all three railroads a lot of us follow, and probably a lot of the others, had "Official Plans". And the majority of structures were built with local modifications as needed from those plans, and were modified over the years. But with a picture you know that at least for long enough to pose for the picture, that's what that station (or steam locomotive, or boxcar, or....)looked like that.
3)For all three of the Pochahontas railroads (and again, for many others)the historical society archives are an incredible online source of information, including drawings and pictures. Also the various publications. It does require some diligence and patience as the three online archives I've dug into are just a bit different in how to find things, but the reward is major. Of course a caveat: be wary of rabbit holes. But getting the information not only will help your modeling, but is fun.

With apologies to those of you who have suffered through my structure clinics or have listened to our debates over great quantities of coffee.
And a very Merry Christmas or other holidays to all, and a healthy and peaceful New Year.

Hello — What color did the C&O paint their wooden towners and stations?
