Abe,
     Those signals were replaced with dwarf type signals at some point 
in time and along with two others (tracks 57, 56 & 55) protected 
movement through the only "double slip switch" (power operated) on the 
N&W system. If I remember correctly, the hand operated switch on the 
crossover led to the "Mullins" track, where later on in life they parked 
our outgoing units on.
