Jimmy is correct. Franklin’s literature shows the most common arrangement for exhausting a trailing truck booster was via a long run on the right side of the engine (steam supply ran on the left), then tied into the main exhaust stand inside the smokebox. The J’s application likely fits this model (I don’t think I’ve seen a right side photo of 602; that would answer the question).
I thought exhausting a trailer booster in any other way was rare (excluding boosters applied to the tender, like the N&W’s hump engines, and on the LS&I 2-8-0 #33 I spent my formative years around - those seem to universally exhaust out of / into the tender somewhere). But I’m learning that’s not the always the case. NYC’s modern Mohawk’s sent their trailer truck’s booster exhaust back to the tender, supposedly to save the piping weight on the locomotive. There may be other examples, but I believe NYC’s arrangement was an exception in the grand scheme of things. As an aside, it’s not clear to me where the outlet actually was in that example. My suspicion is that it exhausted into the tank space, with a relief valve (as LS&I did it), but that’s another topic.

Search the archives, the drawings are there. It is hard for me to see the archive drawings on my small screen tablet, but, it appears to me that Class J locomotives with boisters exhausted the booster steam into the smokestack.

Subject: Booster Equipped Engines on the N&W
Yesterday I watched a digitized old movie of Booster-equipped engines on the Lehigh & New England RR. The Boosters exhausted through an orface on the top sheet of the tender, behind the slope sheet.
This made me realize that I do not know how N&W engines exhausted spent steam from the Booster.
Anyone know the answer...?
