The 2-10-10-2's were noted for, among other things, having 48" diameter low
pressure cylinders; legend has it that those had to be shipped separately
from the locomotives as they wouldn't fit in some of the clearances in some
of the intermediate roads. Without going to the bookshelf, they had
170,000 pounds tractive effort working in simple. Top speed was
comparatively low, consistent with the service they were designed for and
the 56" drivers. According to Lloyd Lewis (who literally wrote the book on
Virginian locomotives)they were intended for the hill up Clarks gap, but
because they, and the other steam locomotives, created such a hazardous
condition in the tunnels they were replaced in that service by the
electrics. They did serve on the flatter areas on the east end, where they
could move monumental coal trains slowly in what has been described as
"conveyor like" service. On the IOGroups there is a Virginian list where
there are a handful of extremists who can provide more information than any
rational person could want.

FWIW, only two railroads in this country had 2-10-10-2's. Virginian and
Santa Fe. Some of the Virginian's lasted until the 1950's. The Santa Fe's
were considered major failures and didn't last long.
