 Switchers didn't blow their whistles very often. No occasion! They did use their bells.

 I went through my analysis of all Link's recordings (published and unpublished) and found no recording that could be identified specifically as an S1/S1a whistle. There were only two remote possibilities (Link Tape E, track 4 and Link Tape AV, track 1) and in both cases there was either a Class A or Y6 nearby. IMO it's fair to say that the 0-8-0's would sound the same as any other N&W freight locomotive. So I agree with John Garner's conclusion.

There is audio of S1/S1a's on the Link recordings but no audio of a 
whistle that I'm aware of (pls correct me if I'm wrong).
