Jay,

Referring to the attached c.1926 track chart you've got several
elevations to choose from depending on where in Rural Retreat you wish
to measure. These elevations are shown at the very bottom of the chart.
BTW, I like your idea "to honor my family".

The summit west of town is listed as 2580.4'. The highest point on the
Virginia and Tennessee Railroad.

My Grandfather ran the Rural Retreat Drug Store for many years so as
child born in 1951 I was very fortunate to see N&W steam engines working
for a living whenever we visited. I have fond memories of small town
life in the 50's which I wish I appreciated more back then.
I am getting ready to order the 611 license plate for my new car and I'd
like to honor my family in a small way by including the elevation of the
tracks in the town of Rural Retreat as part of the number. I've looked
in the archives for that information and would be happy to order a few
of them if I can be certain they'd have that info on them but the
writing is a little too hard for me to make out.
When I do a google search for that info I get 2513' but I have no way of
knowing where that measurement is taken.
Any and all suggestions are much appreciated.
Thanks, Jay Jessup
