Sadly, Saint Charles may only see four trains -a month- currently. CSX did load one train for Eastman back in January since it was rerouted from Mayflower’s sister loadout Balkan. I believe that it was the last time CSX was up at Mayflower since they ran them off with their high rates. Electric Fuels is now under Progress Energy Florida, and those haven’t been up there in over a decade or more. <div dir="auto">The St. Charles Branch is an ex Southern Branch line, that didn't connect to the N&W. Originally, the Southern came into Appalachia, VA from Knoxville, via Big Stone Gap, VA. At Appalachia, was Southern's yard. On the north end they connected
with the L&N and the Interstate. On the south end the is St. Charles Jct., which goes west to St. Charles and splinters off in two directions, north to Mayflower and northeast to Benedict, now called Lone Mtn. Processing. About 2 miles east of St. Charles
proper, in Pocket, is L&N Jct., where the L&N connects from Pennington (Gap). L&N used to have trackage rights from Appalachia to St. Charles and all of the mines above it. Now CSX comes in from Harlan via Hagans Switchback and Pennington. </div>

<div dir="auto">Both NS and CSX still pull coal off of the St. Charles Branch, but it is down to a couple of trains a day, with Lone Mtn. being the primary source for loading. Mayflower has recently started loading again under new ownership, and export contracts.
CSX hauls coal for TN Eastman in Kingsport, and Electric Fuels in Crystal River, FL. Train frequency is about 4 trains a week, but is expected to increase soon. There is a plethora of updated information on the Appalachia Coal Mines and Railroading site on
