<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"><div dir="auto"><div>Externally the difference between a Leslie S and RS is nominal, the details west AH-191 RS can be converted to a S by filing off the "nibs" on the rear of the bells (rear being the diphagm end not the trumpet end). (Bell is the proper terminology for each trumpet that that makes up a horn). There are 5 bells on a S-5. The suffixes discribe the length, arrangements and facings of the bells and therefore the particular tone.</div><div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto">The extra F in the suffixes of the details west unit does imply a difference to the only TR suffixed that the N&W fitted.</div><div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto">My knowledge ends there unfortunately regarding bell arrangement specifics.</div><div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto">It is interesting to hear that N&W toyed with fitting Nathan M5s to the first GP9s.</div><div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto">After the initial 30s/40s era of the single chime 'blaat' horn, most roads moved to 3 chimes for freight a 5 chimes for passenger. Nathan seemed the preferred choice for late 40s into 50s.</div><div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto">Virginian fitted M3s on all their FM units. C&O fitted M5s on some F7s, WM fitted a pair of M5s on some of their F7s, B&O fitted M3s on their 4th order of F7s.</div><div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto">Horn use, style, placement and manufacturer in vogue changed over the years. Leslie was the go to in 60s and since about 2000 the default has primarily been Nathan K5s on the class ones. Some roads were more brand loyal than others.</div><div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto">Atlas traditionally model horn configuration as per the demo units of a particular loco. VGN liveried Atlas H24-66 have a single blaat point forward on the side of the long hood and one backwards on the side of the short hood. The only FM H24-66 with this arrangement were the demos which Wabash bought and ended up on the N&W roster post '64.</div><div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto">The GP9s factory painted in the origal livery, but after the first renumbering, were marketed as Proto 2000 in there blue box phase. These are the ones renowned for splitting axle gears. They are typical phii GP9s so are not bang on for N&w units but 99% of people can live with the louvres where they are but the horn arrangement needs changing. Not too long after they were renumbered 710-713. They were painted black with numbers and letters in the same color and font style as N&W steam power. The first GP-9’s were phase 2 style carbodies with dynamic brakes. The radiator fans were four 36 inch cap tops. The air horn was mounted at the mid point of the cab on the centerline of the locomotive. Years ago, Life Like offered Proto 2000 Models in HO scale of 710 and 713.
