There was an article in the Arrow about the time period when the C&O joined the N&W at that point, and had leased trackage rights from that point to Valley Crossing until 1927 or thereabouts. I dig into the archives every now and again to find out more - especially about the junction at Gregg’s. The fill on the north side of the embankment leading to the Scioto River bridge was widened, and presumably the operator at Glen Jean controlled the entry and exit to the connection (for those unfamilar with the area, the connection was immediately to the east of the Scioto River bridge, Glen Jean was immedately on the west end of the bridge), but I haven’t found anything one way or the other about that.

I’ve long been curious about how steep (or not) the C&O’s drop to the N&W was at that point. There seems to be about a thirty foot difference between the two on the modern alignment. Building the C&O Northern in 1927 while keeping the connection in place must have been quite the challenge given how tight things were between the river, N&W, C&O, DT&I, and Gregg’s Hill.

Attached is a photo taken in April 2021 in the area for those unfamiliar with the area, looking compass north. The dirt road on the far right was the DT&I, which drops off fairly steeply behond this point to duck under the C&ON on the way to it’s own Scioto River bridge. The treeline in the distance, past the brown field is the fill crossing the Scioto flats leading up to the bridge. The C&O’s connection to the N&W was about where the embankment disappears behind the treeline in the middle distance.

Matt Goodman

Columbus, Ohio

On Aug 25, 2025, at 6:16 PM, NW Mailing List <nw-mailing-list@nwhs.org> wrote:

Around 2007 we drove out to Greg's Hill where the N&W DT&I and the C&O were next door neighbors. I wanted to model this area. On the way back home we followed the original line from Jay Bird road up through Beaver Pond behind the Plum Run quarry east of Peebles. I mapped this area out and this overtook Greg's Hill. Both lines were used together for a time. The valuation maps say it was abandoned in 1959 but I don't know when the tracks were removed or the last time the two lines were used together. In 2008 two friends and I documented everything we could find up to the east side of Cedar Fork Creek. I am building the wood trestle #2027 that crossed the creek.
