Jim,

Mullins Middle Track was located between MP N-368 and -369. It
stored west coal overflow from Flat Top Yard, set off by mine runs
returning east to Bluefield from the Pocahontas and Bluestone
Branches. Tug River crews picked up the west loads on their way back
to Williamson, then Elkhorn crews out of Bluefield set off empties
here for outbound mine runs to pick up the next day. The middle
track came out prior to 1960 as the overall flow of coal shifted
east.

Regarding Italy, a facing-point spur came off of the westbound main
at the west end of the middle track near MP N-369. It turned up
Brush Fork for about a mile to a cut-stone quarry and was worked by
the Graham/Bluestone Shifter out of Bluefield. The nearby community
was known as Little Italy. Google shows a street on the south side
of Route 102 that shares the name of the Italian island of Capri,
known for its rock formations and stonework.

I am not aware of N&W agents at mines. In some cases, anyway, a
mine supervisor/clerk/tipple foreman would communicate regularly
with the nearest yard office about such matters as empties and
bills.

From a 1917 copy of N&W Officers, Agents and
Stations, heading West out of Bluefield there is shown a couple
of listing with which I am not familiar. Namely at MP 368
"Mullins" and at MP 369 Italy. Does anyone have any information
on these places?
