These units were acquired when the N&W purchased the
Illinois Terminal in 1982. 

The green ex IT SD39s with "NW" on there sides are
clearly "patch" re-lettering jobs.

They were leased by the IT for 15 years (built 1969) -
N&W had no interest in keeping these units as they had
no dynamic brakes and were extremely light. N&W
honored the lease but quickly returned them at the end
of the lease in 1984.

This probably accounts for the reason they were not
fully repainted into N&W black.
