These flat cars, referred to either "Reacher" or "Pole" cars, were rebuilt  
out of 1918 box cars in the 60000 series. They looked like small flat cars sans 
 any housing, hoods ETC. Only the one used at the Roanoke shops had a 
locomotive  short hood and other enbetterments added. The main purpose was to keep 
the  locomotive exhaust, (steam or later diesel) from being discharged into the  
buildings.
 
Know cars were NW 1 thought NW 28. The most famous and last in service was  
NW 6. This car was built out of boxcar NW 60256. on 7-46 at the Roanoke East 
End  Car shops. This car was retired 1987 and sold to Louisville Scrap Metals on 
1-90  for scrapping. Several were assigned to the Norfolk, VA. Ford plant.
