Not the problem it appears to be.  Locomotives with one driver set,  with 90 
degree difference start just fine.  With two non - connected driver  sets, no 
easy way to prevent the situation as in the picture.  I recall  someone's idea 
for 'modern steam' about 15 years ago.  Proposed actual rod  connection, 
between front and rear, to maintain  optimum steam flow and  minimize chance of 
drivers slipping.  As far as I know, never got past  concept drawings.
