Help for a neophyte ?

Good morning, gang,

I was checking out some postcards on ebay and came across one of the 1960s 
verion of the "Pocahontas" headed by a pair of EMD GP-9s.  I understand the 
Norfolk and Western was one of the last roads to use stream locomotives, but I  
have no idea exactly when they gave in and began using diesel power.

Can someone more knowledgeable than I please tell me when the GP-9s first 
appeared on the Norfolk and Western Railroad ?
