I was looking into getting some of these bulbs but couldn't find any made in
the USA. All the ones I saw were made in China. No thanks!

Another interesting, and I hope, continuing discussion. There are already a
few compact fluorescent bulbs
(the spiral type) which will operate via conventional dimmers. No doubt
that feature will be extended across the full range of wattages to satisfy
demand and regulations. The 'warm-up' time, from my experience, is about 20 to 30
seconds and may be inherent. Both fluorescent tubes and CFL's are available
in different 'color temperatures' for those whose color perception is
sharper than mine.

The real plus for CFL's, from the energy use point of view is that of
providing equal brightness from only 20 to 25 percent of the energy consumption of
an incandescent, not to mention longer bulb life; years instead of months.
The higher first cost is more than offset by the energy savings.
