Actually, If you going to paint, Black Scalecoat has finer pigment of all
the paints.  Plus Scalecoat has two blacks.
It's never simple!

I'm just glad we don't have to have a committee and lynch mob to figure out
what color of black N&W used! The Testors black seems to be a pretty good
match LOL. Need a little age? Drop in a few drops of white.
 
Hmmm I can see it now. Nickel Plate's black vs N&W black vs Southern black
vs Norfolk Southern black vs Penn Central black.  Oh the horror...
 
Even on today's diesels they use different yellows for the handrails.
