Guys; the N&W regularly pushed against the caboose, and cut off helpers on the fly. 
In the '50's heading east out of Roanoke, an A would typically have the train, with an "Improved Y" as a front end helper, and a second "Improved Y" as pusher on the steep grade. The pusher would cut off on the fly.

In this case, the caboose should have been tacked on behind the pushers.
