You could put the machines in shanties next to the traxk.

 

If you want them underneath the layout, you can put the Ø3/8” hole off to
the side, with the throw bar extending over the hole.  Harder to hide.

And just when I was so proud of myself for finishing the trackwork I went to
install my tortise switch machines.
 
Only the directions (and some youtube videos) say to "drill a 3/8" hole FROM
THE TOP" to install.  Please don't tell me that I have to rip up all those
switches...is there a way to work around the inability to plan ahead?
