Can you ID this tender?

Picture of the 2003 is in Jeffries "N&W: Giant of Steam." it is on page 164 of my first edition. The revised edition may have it on a different page number, I don't have the revised edition.     As for the model, the best place to start is the 16k tender from the Life Like Heritage 2-8-8-2. Extend the coal bunker up with sheet styrene. Problem is: I don't know how you would find one separately. Alternately, you could start from the Bachmann Spectrum Auxiliary tender which is available separately, but you would have to fill all the holes from the grab irons, lower the water hatch, and build the entire coal bunker from scratch.-- a lot of work! Wish I could offer something easier, but be glad we don't have to start all the way from scratch for the distinctive N&W tenders.

This particular mod was not common. As a rule, N&W tenders tended to stay "as built" with the exception of the 22,000 gallon tenders. All the 22A, 22B and 22C were extensively modified (rebuilt) for higher capacity. The tenders of the 30 S1's were also modified for higher capacity. The mod in your picture would appear to be for increased coal capacity. I have seen pictures of a couple of Z's with similar 16k tenders, and the 2003 had an 18k (fishbelly) tender with the same mod of the coal bunker. But it was not common

 Jim,
Thanks. Did the N&W modify many tenders? Why? Was it for a particular use or as an experiment? I haven't noticed this mod before so I'll be going back over the collection to see if I can find more examples.

No. It is not even a "water bottom." It is a 16,000 gallon tender with a modified coal bunker.

Which tender is this? It seems to have a very high coal bunker. Is this an 18,000g/26t water bottom tender with a modified coal bunker?
