Also just received my #521 and, like you, plan to kitbash another (GP9 body on GP20 frame). My question - what’s the best paint to match the Athearn unit? Note - please don’t debate what’s right, wrong or indifferent. I just want to have a match.

I concur! I just got a couple of them (1 red #521 and 1 blue #502 to be repainted red). I’m very happy with them and they still look/work okay with the Athearn ones I kitbashed 30+ years ago. I was surprised that the #521 has a metallic finish on it as they did originally. I couldn’t tell that from Athearn’s artwork but it was a nice surprise.

Have enjoyed the discussion of the RS11 project, but in the midst I received my Athearn Genesis N&W Redbird #514. Simply beautiful. Have waited a long time for this model.
