Any tips on that N scale kit? I?ve been meaning to get one if they?re still available somewhere. What trucks/couplers did you use?

If "clumsy carp" here can build an N scale CF kit from AMB, I am sure you can easily handle the HO version.  If you can handle brass locomotive modification, a caboose is within your capabilities.  Go for it.

Nigel,

That makes sense economically. The laser stuff just seems intimidating. More comfortable working in brass or plastic.

Considering the fairly large N&W following you would think someone would have done at least a CF. Many were sold to other roads.

Roger,

You should give the AMB kit a try. It is not too much money if it doesn't work out, and if it does you can get two more and still have less money in them than one new Athearn Genesis caboose.

I've given up on their project. They are so far behind on prior projects the N&W cabins are too far in the future for me. I'm 70 and probably won't ever live long enough at the rate they complete a project to see one. They do great cars but they are seriously lacking in communication skills.

Wish someone else were doing them. The latest plastic releases from Atlas and Athearn are pretty nice and detailed enough for me if only they would do a CF, CG or CH for us.

I'm looking for old Westside/Balboa cars. I thought about the AMB CF but I've never dealt with a laser kit.

The line under the cab number indicates that the unit does not have self aligning couplers. In a reverse move with other units the lined unit will jack knife causing the truck to derail.

The N scale version (as well as the HO) are available through the Commissary:

http://www.nwhs.org/commissary/models.html

N scale is all the way at the bottom of the page
