One is one of the best and most enjoyable one I have read and the other was a big waste of money! I have 1,200+ railroad books so I know when I see good and bad ones. If you haven't purchased N&W Six-Eleven, 3 Times A Lady, Revised Edition you are missing out on a great book. Awesome photos and history of our Girl, well written with lots of good tidbits about her in service and he afterlife (lives?). Really looking forward to Ed's new book showing up someday. I know that will be a special place in my library. Roger HuberDeer Creek Locomotive Works -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Between the Spectrum and the BLI, I prefer the BLI. My Spectrums were early runs and my BLI?s are Paragon 1?s (QSI). My Spectrum engines did not pull well on the somewhat steep ruling grade on my layout. I also felt that the paint and detail rendering on the BLI was better. I have not had any mechanical problems on my BLI J?s. A friend of mine had a gear meshing problem on one of his BLI J?s. My first Soectrum had the drawbars on the lead and trailing trucks mismatched. Once that was corrected it ran much better. I think the Spectrum J?s have also been improved since the early runs. Hopefully someone else can offer some feedback on an MTH J. I hope this is helpful. I have a paragon and paragon 2. Sorry to hear about your problems. I have also had cracked gears in almost all my BLI N&W steam. My paragon 2 j is doing well so far. I also had a bad reed switch in my A, along with a cracked gear. My y6 also had a cracked gear. Strangely, my BLI USRA locomotives have been awesome. My experience with BLI is that you just get unlucky, but after you fix the issues they are the best. The MTH is pretty nice, but the sound is garbage imo. I have not seen a worthy Bachmann at all. I have one of the first run MTH models, and it's fantastic, except for protosounds. The software will occasionally crash on me and until you cut power to the loco the sound completely disappears. The BLI one, aside from any issues you have, seems to be good. But it doesn't have marker lights, and the smoke unit can melt the boiler if you aren't careful. I don't know much about the 2nd run of MTH J's, except that they're using the "improved" drawbar, which if it's the same that the H10 uses, was horrible. Supposedly the ProtoSounds has been improved, but I have no experience with that. ScaleTrains bought the MTH tooling, so I would assume that sometime in the future ScaleTrains will release a quality J that's every bit as good as the MTH version, but without the flaws. If you have no need to get one now, I'd wait for that one. That's what I'm doing, but I already have a perfectly good one so I'm not in a rush. I didn't mention the Bachmann one. There's (AFAIK) 3 or 4 models from the 80's onward. The old ones from the 80's and 90s have white gears that split, and are a pain to work on. The later models might be better, I think the latest is a DCC + Sound version, again I really don't know. Maybe check youtube for reviews on it. -Drew On Sat, Oct 23, 2021 at 7:32 PM NW Modeling List wrote: > Hi guys I was wondering if someone could please tell me who makes the best > go scale class J model of 611? You asked about the BEST models of the J, well to me I have to say the Sunset brass ones fit that quest. They had 2 different runs that I own. The first in the yellow box was engines 605-610 with the roll top tenders. The 2nd run in the straw colored box had some detail enhancements especially on the round nose details. It came in a 604 version with Laird crossheads and as 611-613 with the flat top tender and Alligator crossheads and also as 611 with her first excursion details. They also brought in the J-1 unstreamlined version. Both runs I have run very smoothly and have never had issues. I have 3 J-1's and 8 J's and they are very smooth and trouble free. They were made by Samhongsa. To my knowledge none of the Sunset models came with factory paint. Key and Overland both imported J's. I have not seen them in person but feedback suggests they are excellent and have better detail than the Sunsets. Overland also did the J-1 and all versions were available F/P.
