N&W M-1

Besides the valve gear difference, the M1's also differed from the M's by having what came to be called the "poor man's feedwater heater", which is what that second dome is (a check valve which scattered the water). BTW: although newer, the M1's tended to be retired before the M's (possibly because N&W did not like Walscherts valve gear).

Thanks all for your feedback. It’s appreciated.

Finding a straight M class is difficult. I have the M-1 because it was the closest I could find.

Jim King,

The M-1 also differs in that it has Walschaerts valve gear and the M class had Stephenson originally but were retro fitted with Baker later.

The Sunflower stack cap was only on a few engines that ran on the Creeper from what I have heard.

I have a shot of 429 in Damascus 1952 (attached) that closely matches your model except for the 2nd dome.  None of my pix, and I have many, show that feature.  The small tender was replaced with a larger, 6-wheel truck version on 429 by 1957 according to my photos.  The “sunflower” spark arrestor limits the engine number options greatly.

I’ve been looking online to try to identify a likely number for this engine that Sunset built a model of years back. I know so many engines have differences (headlight placement, tender type, etc.).

Can anyone help identify which number(s) this model might represent? I’ve considered 475, even though it’s not accurate, but many similarities. It would be nice to know which number it really should be.

Thanks,

Phil Miller
