inside of black coal hoppers

I presume that coal hoppers weren't painted inside.  I figure the paint would wear off with the abrasiveness of coal.  I would like to know if the inside was rusty or if the coal polished the rust off also.  Were they shiny silver inside or rusty colored after a few years of use?Thank you,Mike Shockley
