Here’s a photo I found that shows one of the Top Gon cars. I believe the interior is coated in coal dust.

Mike,

 

I couldn't find my photos of N&W hopper interiors but here's what some WM hoppers looked like in service. I have pictures of them being painted and it seems only the exteriors were painted. Yes, the coal & other commodities hauled would wear off any paint. Hope this helps some.

I presume that coal hoppers weren't painted inside.  I figure the paint would wear off with the abrasiveness of coal.  I would like to know if the inside was rusty or if the coal polished the rust off also.  Were they shiny silver inside or rusty colored after a few years of use?
