[om-list] More BSD/X11 vs. LGPL

Here is an interesting summary of a recent discussion within the Wine project whether to switch from the X11 license to the LGPL license:

This of course, is mostly interesting for those of us who would like to make a living working on open source or open sourceable software. 

One of the models described here is what Tom and I call the amoeba model: 

1. Core project is open source under a BSD style license
2. Commercial firms participate in project but also develop and sell proprietary enhancements
3. Proprietary enhancements lose strategic advantage for variety of reasons
4. Firms contribute enhancements to core project
5. Firms move on to new bleeding edge territory
