Looks like EC's old touring buddy's new album (and an older one) will be released in Surround Sound.  Wouldn't it be great to see this catch on and have the EC back catalog released as same!

Two Super Audio CDs from Mark Knopfler?
In recent days there has much talk on the Internet about the news that the forthcoming album by Mark Knopfler entitled Shangri-La would be released in Europe in Surround Sound SACD. I can confirm that is indeed the case. Universal Music International has acknowledged that they are planning a "day and date" release of Knopfler's new album in both Hybrid Layer Surround Sound CD and Stereo CD on September 27th in Europe.

The new album by the founder of the Dire Straits is named after the Shangri-La Studios in Malibu, California where the album was recorded. Surround Sound fans will be pleased to hear that veteran producer and engineer Chuck Ainlay was the recording engineer on this one with mastering done by Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering. 

When the talk about the Shangri-La Surround Sound SACD first surfaced, some High Fidelity Review readers asked if there was any chance we might see some of Knopfler's earlier albums in SACD Surround Sound as well. Well, I did ask around out that and was surprised to hear that a Surround Sound mix of the Sailing to Philadelphia album by Knopfler apparently exists and may indeed be coming to SACD Surround in Europe after the Shangri-La album is released. No word yet from Universal Music International on that, but I'll keep my ear to the ground in the weeks ahead to see if there are any developments on that one.
