Individuals should contact their insurance companies and let them know that
the home is ready for demolition. It may be wise to send this to the person
one speaks with in a written follow up detailing the conversation. Demand
that the insurance company send a statement to you in terms of their
response. If the insurance company delays your moving forward- an immediate
call to the insurance commissioner is warranted and you should take as many
photos of every aspect of your home, including measurements of the perimeter
and inside, if possible. Be sure to give the insurance company a firm date
as a deadline. Make it their problem to comply with the law, not your
problem to accomodate them, but be smart about each move you make- a little
extra inconvenience while getting them to respond will be much better for
you than a hasty decision that creates more hurdles.
