Operation Blue Roof underway in St. Bernard Parish; moment of silence to be
observed for former parish firefighter killed in work-related accident in
Terrytown.

Operation Blue Roof, a Corps of Engineers and FEMA project to provide
temporary repairs to roofs damaged by Hurricane Katrina, has been underway
since Monday, Oct. 24, in St. Bernard Parish.

About 150 people have applied for help under the program in St. Bernard,
according to Maj. Steve Hric of the Corps of Engineers.

In the program, plastic covering is used to provide temporary repairs until
the property owner can properly repair the roof.

To be considered for the program, a building must be both structurally sound
and deemed inhabitable and inspectors from St. Bernard Parish government are
involved.

For more information, residents can call 1-888-ROOFBLU or visit the Disaster
Relief Center at the super Wal-Mart parking lot in Chalmette. A
right-of-entry form must be signed to allow workers on property.

Also, a moment of silence will be observed by St. Bernard Parish government
at 11 a.m. Wednesday to honor the memory of 14-year veteran St. Bernard
firefighter Jeff Kraus, who was killed Oct. 24 in a work-related accident in
Terrytown, where he was employed at the time of his death.
