Plans Being Made To Open A Post Office in St. Bernard

Plans are underway to open at least one post office in St. Bernard Parish,
according to Parish President Henry "Junior'' Rodriguez and postal
authorities.

Rodriguez said discussions have been underway with the state's congressional
delegation and postal authorities to get postal services established again.

"We're working on re-establishing mail service for St. Bernard Parish,''
said Anthony Ruda, district manager for the state of Louisiana for the U.S.
Postal Service. He said there would be a full service post office, including
rental of postal boxes and distribution of mail, as well as selling stamps
and money orders.

Ruda said no specific date has been set for a re-opening, saying it will
take some time. But he said the Meraux post office building is being
renovated for use and the Chalmette post office could reopen initially in
trailer offices, he said.
